i. World Class
We are pioneering; we are one of a handful of large-scale
tilapia operations in the world. In order to sell into our target
markets we have to be better than European.
ii. Environmental Concern
Before
we began our business we undertook an environmental impact assessment
with independent professionals. This provides the baseline from
which we can assess the changes our business has on the environment,
both positive and negative. We work hand in hand with the department
of national parks and wildlife, they want to see responsible business
within the national park. Audits with the UZ to make sure that we
are maintaining the precious environment. Cages are separated especially
to avoid water quality problems. We are the only fish farmer in
a huge body of water.
iii.
Health & Safety
At employment all our personnel go through a thorough
medical, which are again repeated annually. We have a dedicated
team to monitor all health and safety related issues and carry out
regular in-house training.
iv. Welfare
Our
EIA also looked at the likely social impacts. We not care for our
own employees, but also the local society and we work with the community
to build that relationship. We have a health officer who gives help
and advice on all issues to do with the well being of our employees.
We have active and successful sports clubs within the business.
v. Sustainable
World wide fish stocks are depleting fast and fish
farming is going to in the future going to meet these supplies and
Tilapia is we suited to farming in its natural state, it is vegetarian,
it can be reared without chemicals and growth promoters and the
environment is not being changed, in fact it is being enhanced.
vi.
Development
Good development, natural resource based, competitive
advantage for Zimbabwe, pioneering a new industry for Africa. This
business is the blue-print for fresh water aquaculture, in which
Africa can play a major worldwide globally competitive and large-scale
role.
vii. Husbandry
Unlike terrestrial animals, fish will drop dead
if they are stressed, especially if they not to use chemicals. Tilapia
is not a migratory fish and naturally lives within a small range
- they are territorial. Tilapia are shoaling and naturally live
within a small range. This makes them suitable for net pen aquaculture.
viii. Training
Training,
education and self-improvement is encouraged by the business. We
have various home-study courses that we encourage our personnel
to participate in, including aquaculture, computing, trade skills
and quality assurance.
ix. Profit
We manage a commercial business that is sustainable
in economic terms. We have a long-term competitive advantage in
the European and Southern African markets.
